Today I return to Ennio Morricone and the soundtrack from the final movie in the spaghetti western trilogy: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The title track is well known and one of my favorites, but the lesser known composition titled The Ecstasy of Gold is also exceptional.
It brings the movie to a close with the final scene—the frantic search for gold. This poignant ending gives testimony to the misguided perception that keeps so many of us chasing after happiness in the external world. And yet the Truth patiently waits for us to realize that the happiness we seek is always inside ourselves.
Thomas Zwijsen’s arrangement for guitar is the best I’ve heard. Click for a most beautiful version of: The Ecstasy of Gold.
